California Peace Officer's Memorial Ceremony
The California Peace Officer's Memorial was built by Vic Riesau, who retired in 1977 after a career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. His bronze figures depict a county sheriff of the 1880s, a state trooper of the 1930s, and a city patrolman of the 1980s. To build the large tribute, more than $200,000 was raised in private donations, primarily from the law enforcement community and peace officer's associations.
The single riderless horse with boots reversed in the stirrups which follows the California and United States flags is called the "caparisoned horse." This photo was taken during the 2006 Ceremony at the memorial.

The candle-light vigil is always held the night prior to the day ceremony. In the picture above, participants waved special blue lights to patriotic music.
