2009 VCDSA/Department Shoot

There was a great turnout for the 2009 VCDSA/Department Shoot held on Saturday, September 19 at the Sheriff’s Range, with 121 shooters participating and many family members, kids and guests on hand to watch the fun.  The delicious food was catered by Tommy’s Famous Burgers and major donations were provided by Force Tactical, ProForce Firearms, SureFire, Cold Steel and CopQuest.com.   Force Tactical brought vendors to the Shoot with merchandise displays and many cool raffle and promotional items. Sr. Deputy Joe Mulrooney was a tireless organizer and many other local business sponsors contributed merchandise and gift certificates for the event, including Hampton Inn, Best Buy, Courtyard Marriott, Hair & Beauty Essentials in Camarillo, and Shooter’s Paradise.  All sponsors were gratefully acknowledged by VCDSA members.

It was terrific to see members’ kids laughing in the Jolly Jump, or having fun with squirt guns, while their dads or moms were engaged in some serious shooting competition for Department bragging rights.  Sheriff Brooks attended the event to witness a total of 16 co-ed teams competing for the Lisa Whitney Team Award, including two teams from Sheriff’s Admin.  The winning co-ed team from PTDF, with a score of 1093.497, consisted of Deputy Jennifer Bowie, Deputy Victor Stoicoff, Deputy Jonathan James and Deputy Aaron Wilkinson.

The final Top Gun shoot-off started with the 8 highest overall scorers and came down to a heated match between J.T. Tedder and Matt Young, but when the smoke cleared in the best-2-out-of-3 contest, Young topped last year’s winner to grab the title of 2009 Top Gun.  We were also extra fortunate to have Retired Captain Lance Young on hand for the event as the Top Gun Award was named in his honor.  Lance was recognized for his efforts in starting the Shoot back in the ‘80’s.  He was proud to be there to present this year’s Lance Young Top Gun Award to his son, Sr. Deputy Matt Young.

Top scorers in the individual events included: Bull’s-eye, Aaron Wilkinson with 284; Dozier, Matt Volpe with 13.77 seconds; and, Run-n-Gun, J.T. Tedder with 55.88 seconds.  By all accounts, everyone had a great time and we’re glad you were able to come out and share the day.  Next year, Outback Restaurant will cater the food and we’ll look forward to a bigger and better Shoot!  See you there!
